On the island of El Tigre in the Gulf of Fonseca, the port of Ampala was once the major Pacific port of Honduras but since the 19th century, it has fallen into obscurity and now is developing into a tourist destination. Brightly painted wooden houses clamber up the hillside by the main dock and there is a wooden church in the Central Square but little else. From here, you can explore Isla El Tigre and journey to the summit of the island's extinct volcano and experience impressive panoramas across Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua. There are some nice volcanic and white sand beaches. Isla el Tigre is a small, 5-km-wide island across a narrow strait south of Isla Zacate Grande in the Gulf of Fonseca off Honduras.
