Andros is the northernmost of the Cyclades and is lush and green in the south and scorched and barren in the north. The capital, Andros or Chora, is situated on the east coast of the island 12 miles from the main port Gavrio. It is an elegant town with fine neo classical buildings and features Archaelogical and Fine Art Museums as well as the medieval city of Kato Castro and a Venetian castle (Mesa Kastro) dating from1207. Around the island sights include the medieval village of Mesaria with its pantiled Byzantian church, the spectacular monastery at Moni Panachrantou, the ruined Venetian Palaikastro, the pretty resort of Mpatsi and the ancient tower of Agios Petros. Alternativey there are many good beaches around the island.
