Anegada is the most remote, second largest, most sparsely populated of the main British Virgin Islands, with a population of only 285. At 18 miles long, the reef is the largest barrier coral reef in the Caribbean and the fourth largest in the world. Anegada is the only all coral-and-limestone island in the Virgin Islands’ volcanic chain and is amazingly flat; the highest point reaches an elevation of only 28 feet. Sitting low on the horizon, the island seems to come out of nowhere on the approach, surely part of the reason the island has been so historically dangerous for sailors. Its name, appropriately, is Spanish for “drowned island.”
