Arendal is one of the most important coastal shipping centres of southern Norway, its excellent harbour sheltered by the offshore island of Tromoy. A port since the 14th century, Arendal had the largest fleet in Norway before the steamship era and from the 16th century it prospered from timber exports. These halcyon days are delightfully recalled by Tyholmen, the part of the old town that survived a fire in 1863. Its four-story town hall is one of the largest wooden buildings in Norway. The picture-book charm of today's brightly-painted wooden houses, local art and antique furnishings captures a unique mood of mellow tranquillity, only partly offset by the historic battery, overlooking the harbour, that was used during the war that forced Denmark to cede Norway to Sweden.
