Baddeck is located in the centre of Cape Breton Island, on the north shore of Bras d'Or Lake, 27 miles (43 km) west of Sydney. t can be reached from Port Hawkesbury. Now a fishing and yachting resort with farming and lumbering in the surrounding area, Baddeck was settled in the late 18th century. Alexander Graham Bell is buried at the top of Beinn Bhreagh near his summer home on a headland overlooking the lake and is honoured in Baddeck by a national historic park and museum. Baddeck is the starting point of the scenic 184 mile (296-km) Cabot Trail, which runs through the Margaree Valley and partially encircles Cape Breton Highlands National Park.
