Banda Aceh is the provincial capital and largest city in the province of Aceh, located on the island of Sumatra at the northwestern tip of Indonesia at the mouth of the River Krueng Aceh. Many will recall the destruction caused to this port on the northern tip of Sumatra by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. Enormous effort has been made to rebuild since the fateful day but the power of the Tsunami is still evident as we see a 250 foot vessel perched several miles inland where it was deposited after riding a huge wave. You can visit the Tsunami Museum.
The Grand Mosque, located in the heart of Banda Aceh, is one of the most famous landmarks in the city. The original mosque was built around the 12th century during the Sultanate of Iskandar Muda (1607-1636). It was rebuilt in 1875 after it was burnt down in the Aceh war.
