The Danes destroyed the town in the 9th century, but it was partially rebuilt by St. Malachy in the 12th century and part of his stone church remains.
Take an excursion from here to visit Mount Stewart House, home and gardens of the Marquis of Londonderry family, now managed by the National Trust, with its famous sunken gardens, lavish interiors and paintings by the artist Stubbs.
