Bangor lies on the southern shore of Belfast Lough, a large inlet on the northeast coast of Ireland with the city of Belfast at its head. Bangor is an popular Edwardian seaside resort with a small harbour serving as the headquarters of the Royal Ulster Yacht Club. About 555, St. Comgall founded a monastery at Bangor, which became a renowned centre for learning. The Danes destroyed the town in the 9th century,but it was partially rebuilt by St. Malachy in the 12th century and part of his stone church remains.
