The Beaufort Sea is part of the Arctic Ocean situated north of the northern coasts of Alaska and the Yukon and North West Territories of Canada. It extends from Point Barrow, on the nortwestern corner of Alaska eastward to Banks Island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The Beaufort Sea is under ice almost the year round; only in August and September does the ice break up, and then only near the coasts. It is named after the British rear admiral Sir Francis Beaufort.
