Belawan is one of the chief ports in the Strait of Malacca which, over the years, has been controlled by the Arabs, Dutch, Portuguese and British. Here you can enjoy great beaches and discover a fascinating culture. It is the port for Medan, capital of North Sumatra Province, the fourth largest city in Indonesia and the gateway to the beautiful Lake Tobin region. Medan has various attractions including the Great Mosque and the Palace of the Sultan of Deli.
From here you can also visit the Beregasti region and Karo Highlands. Here, the volcanoes, Gunung Sinabung and the smoking Gunung Sibayak, rise dramatically from the lush, fruit growing countryside. In Peceren, visit a Batak tribal village with beautifully carved traditional houses. At the Gunung Leuser National Park you can visit the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, which is now one of the world's most important conservation projects. Orphaned orangutans are brought here to learn how to live in the wild again.
