Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides is about 12 km from west to east and a similar distance from north to south and lies between the islands of North Uist and South Uist; it is connected to both by road causeways. Benbecula's main settlement is Balivanich in the northwest which is the main administrative centre for Benbecula, North Uist, South Uist and nearby islands, and has the council offices. Balivanich is also known by it's Gaelic name, Baile a' Mhanaich which means 'town of the monks'. This refers back to the 6th century when there was a monastery here and the ruins of Columba's Church can be found just south of the village.
