Biarritz is a fashionable seaside resort in south-west France on the Bay of Biscay, near Bayonne and the Spanish border. Once a small fishing village, Biarritz was made fashionable by Napoleon III and other royalty. It is noted for its mild climate, the variety of beaches and scenery, its mineral springs and the town's luxurious tourist amenities. A promenade runs between the sandy beaches of the Grand Plage, facing northwest, and the Côte des Basques. The beaches are split by a rocky promontory. The folklore and traditions of the Basque coast is an added attraction.
