Binz is the largest seaside resort on island of Rügen Island, the largest German island in the Baltic Sea. Rügen has many seaside resorts and is national park with bird reserves. Sea bathing started to become popular in the 1870s, and so began Binz's rise to prominence. There are numerous early 20th-century hotels and villas in the city centre and along the seaside promenade. Its main attractions are the 370m Pier, the mid-19th-century Jagdschloss Granitz and the enormous Prora complex just north of the city
