The Bontang Region is home to the Kutai National Park, a remarkable natural habitat of rare tropical flora and fauna. Many species of animals exist in this national park, such as Orang-utan, Bekantan Monkeys, honey bear, deer, Kalimantan rhinos, crocodiles and at least 300 bird species. Teluk Kaba is small bay lying between Bontang and Sangata and the forest here is inhabited by groups of Orang-utan. In the waters of Kaba Bay there are various coloured corals and decorative fish. Settlements of Bajau people are found around the coastal forests of Kaba Bay, in Bontang Koala, with houses that are built over the sea.
