Cabo Frio, locally known as "Cidade do Agito", is located 93 miles (150 km) northeast of Rio de Janeiro. This city is popular due to its beautiful soft white sandy beaches and extravagant entertainment. The beaches are great for swimming, surfing, and diving but watch out for the mosquitos.
The ruins of Forte Sao Mateus, dating from 1616, lie at the mouth of the Canal de Itajuru which connects the Lagoa Araruama and the ocean. Nearby is Strong Beach, or "Praia do Forte", the most popular in town. Angry Beach, or "Praia Brava," is the place to be if you're a skilled surfer - this beach has huge crashing waves.
