Castletownbere is located in County Cork in the southwest of Ireland. It is the main town on the Beara peninsula facing into Bantry Bay. It is the largest whitefish port in Ireland and is set on Berehaven, the second largest natural harbour in the world with Bere island providing the shelter. The Battle of Dunboy took place here in 1602 with "O'Sullivan Beare" and clan fighting the English and it's castle ruins can still be seen. Also visit Puxley's House - once owned by an English copper mining family or Hungry Hill - the highest of the Caha mountains in Beara which has a 60 meter high waterfall flowing down its seaward side. One cannot go to Castletowbere without a visit to MacCarthy's Bar but you may prefer the Buddhist Centre with weekly meditations which is only a few miles west of the town.
