Colonsay or St Columba's Isle is one of the Inner Hebrides. It lies north-west of Jura and is connected at low tide to Oronsay in the south. Eilean nan Ron, to the south-west, is an important grey seal breeding colony. Colonsay is 13 km (8 miles) long and its main town is Scalasaig where you can see an Iron Age fort, reoccupied in the middle ages. The private island of Oransay was named after St Oran, who accompanied St Columba on his epic journey from Ireland in the 6th century. With permission you can visit the beautifully preserverd Augustinian Priory.
