Concepcion is located 10 miles up the Biobio river in the extreme south of the central zone of Chile and is reached from the port of Talcahuano sited at the neck of a peninsula on the coast. It has the best harbour in the country and is Chile's main naval base where you can take a tour of the Peruvian battleship "Huascar" that defeated Arturo Prat, a great Chilean Navy hero during the Pacific War. Nearby is Parques Tumbes and the coast has some good beaches.. Founded in 1550 Concepcion was a frontier stronghold in the war against the Mapuche after 1600. It has an attractive Plaza de Armas with the Interdencia and Cathedral and interesting history and art museums. Sixty miles south of the city are the spectacular Laja Falls.
