One a popular 19th century spa resort, Cres and Losinj are islands in the Kvarner group off the northwest Croatian coast, linked by a bridge across a channel dug by the early Romans. Visit Veli Losinj and the village of Osor on Cres. Cres is a hilly island and is indented in the west and south with bays and pebbly beaches while the east and north coast has steep rocky cliffs. In its centre is the fresh water lake of Vrana. Cres has Roman ruins, a Renaissance clock tower, city loggia, and a 15th/16th century church as well as being one of the last habitats of the rare griffon vulture . Following the fall of Rome, Cres became a part of the Byzantine Empire and then the Croatian kingdom, Venice, Hungary-Croatia, Austria, France, Italy, Yugoslavia, and now independent Croatia.
