Cuttyhunk Island is the outermost of the Elizabeth Islands in Massachusetts. It was the first site of English settlement in New England. It is located between Buzzards Bay to the north and Vineyard Sound to the south and lies 12 miles south of New Bedford, MA and 8 miles west of Gay Head, Martha's Vineyard. Penikese Island and Nashawena Island are located to the north and east, respectively. The island was originally named Poocuohhunkkunnah by the native Wampanoag tribe but was renamed in 1602 by the English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold.
Cuttyhunk is a quiet, isolated ocean island which has a small beach, a great harbour, good fishing, a few dozen houses and some beautiful hiking trails.
