Dalian (Lu Ta) is located on the West Korea Bay in north eastern China on the Liaodong (Liaotung) Peninsula. The main ice free commercial port in northeastern China, it was transformed from a small fishing town into a modern commercial port and laid out as a spacious western city under Russian control from1898 - 1905. After the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5) the Japanese enlarged and modernized the city and it became the main port for Japanese controlled Manchuria.
Following the defeat of Japan in World War II, it was placed under joint Soviet-Chinese control in 1945 but was returned to China in 1955 since when it has become a centre of heavy industry.
