Donegal is a seaport and market town in County Donegal located on the River Eske at the head of Donegal Bay, established as a Viking stronghold. In Gaelic it is called Dún Na Ngall ("Fort of the Foreigners"). Visit the ruins of the Franciscan Donegal Abbey (founded 1474) and Donegal Castle, a stronghold of the O'Donnells, rebuilt in the early 17th century.
