El Hierro, nicknamed Isla del Meridiano ("The Meridian Island"), is the smallest and furthest south and west of the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. El Hierro has a diverse landscape from fascinating volcanic formations in the south and west, passing through the dense pine and laurel forests of the central zone up into the northwest to fertile land of the El Golfo Valley with vineyards and plantations.
Valverde is the island's capital, a picturesque small settlement with gardens and parks, an interesting fortificated church and a nice square from which you have a great view over the sea. Tiñor, located on the tableland, is impressive with its pyramids of volcanic ashes on green meadows. In Tamaduste you will find a large lake of crystalline water while Restinga is a favourite place for diving and fishing.
