The port of Eureka is on the far north coast of northern California, on Humboldt Bay. It is a major lumber and commercial-fishing centre and from here you can visit the redwoods in the Six Rivers National Forest. Founded in 1850 it is the site of Fort Humboldt (now a state historic monument) and scene of several Indian uprisings from 1853 to 1865), and home to the College of the Redwoods.
