Fanning (Tabuaeran) Island is one of many idyllic tropical atolls forming the Line Islands, part of the Republic of Kiribati. The island was uninhabited when Europeans discovered it, but archaeological evidence suggests early Tongan visitors. A copra producer during the 19th century it now has a small and laid-back population and you can snorkel, dive and swim around much of the coast.
The island became part of the British protectorate of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands in 1916 and part of the independent Republic of Kiribati in 1977.
