Set in picture postcard scenery at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, a southern branch of the huge Sognefjord, Flaam boasts a typical 17th century rural Norwegian church but little else except two hotels, a station and spectacular scenery. Despite its small size, most ships will be able dock alonside if the pier is not occupied. Flaam marks the innermost point of the famous Sognefjord region and makes the perfect starting point from which to explore its stunning scenery.
But the village is mainly the start or finish point for one of the most spectacular railway journeys in Europe, ascending over 3,000 feet to Myrdal, 14 miles up the mountain, past the Tvinne Waterfall and affording magnificent views over the valley. Many circular tours from Flaam take Norway's second longest tunnel to Gudvangen and then the Naeroy Valley and up Norway's steepest road zig zagging up the valley side past the dramatic Tvinde Waterfall and on to the Stalheim Lodge before passing the Oppheim Lake and Vinje en route to the ancient town of Voss . During the eleventh century, a cross was erected in Voss to celebrate the region's new Christianity. From Voss a local train takes you to Myrdal to meet the Flaam Railway and the stunning journey back to Flaam with its dramatic views of sheer cliffs, waterfalls and streams.
