Flushing (Vlissingen) is an important North Sea port in southern Netherlands, at the mouth of the Western Schelde River. Its outer harbour serves ocean-going ships and a fishing fleet, and is an international ferry and container terminal. Its beaches attract some tourism. The historical importance of Flushing lies in its strategic location at the mouth of the Western Schelde, which gives the town control over waterborne access to Antwerp. The Western Schelde is not dammed as are neighbouring estuaries under the Delta dam project, because the seaway to Antwerp has to be kept open. The 14th-century St Jacobskerk, rebuilt after a fire in 1911, is a notable historic building, as are the Prisoners' Tower (built 1563) and the 18th-century town hall.
