Puerto del Rosario welcomes you to Fuerteventura in the Eastern Canaries, just 60 miles from the African mainland. This almost rainless volcanic island is the second largest of the Canary Islands and has the archipelago's best and most extensive beaches - said to total over 150. The island is semi-desert because of the its proximity to Saharan Africa and is dotted with inactive volcanoes, including Las Arenas, Lajares, Malpaís Grande, and Malpaís Chico. The main resort areas are at Corralejo, Caleta de Fustes and on the Jandia peninsula in the south of the island.
Fuerteventura was conquered for the House of Castile by Juan de Bethencourt, a French seafarer, between 1402 and 1417. His banner is preserved in the town of Betancuría, founded in his name. The indigenous population were the Guanche, a Berber people who eventually became extinct. Near Muda, a peak 689 m (2,260 ft) high, stands a monument to the Spanish novelist Miguel de Unamuno, who was exiled on the island in 1924.
