Ocean Ports of Call

Gabes - Tunisia Highlights:
Historic old quarters, Troglodyte village
Gabes is a seaport with a turbulent past, Phoenician in origin, and developed in turn by the Romans, Arabs, Turks and French. Today Gabes is an amalgam of old and new, its prime appeal lying in the historic old quarters of Jara, Boulbala and especially Mensel where you'll find maze-like alleys, mosques and lively markets. The town's vast surrounding oasis and villages can be explored by caleche horse-carriage, while at nearby Matmata, the lunar landscapes and troglodyte village were scenes from the film Star Wars.
