Ocean Ports of Call

Ghazaouet - Algeria Highlights:
Ghazaouet is Algeria's westernmost port located close to the border with Morocco and sits in a well-protected bay on the Mediterranean Sea. The Romans named Ghazaouet Ad Fratres (the Two Brothers), after the twin 25m rocks that rise out of the water at the mouth of the harbour. Under the French the port was known as Nemours, after a French governor. The centre still has a French feel, with its covered market and a church, now a library. The Pecherie, at the east end of the port, is a good place to walk and watch the fish being landed off boats.

From here you can reach Tlemcen, an interesting and cultured city which has an 11th century Great Mosque and the deconsecrated Sidi Bel Hassan Mosque which is now a museum.
