Guerande lies on the edge of the marshes of the Grand-Briere, off the Bay of Biscay in western France, near the mouth of the River Loire, near Nantes. This medieval fortified town is enclosed by 15th century ramparts with four gateways and won its fortune by controlling the salt pans in the surrounding inlets. Nearby is the resort and beautiful beach of La Baule and the small fishing and leisure port of Le Croisic. From Guerande you can explore the marshes or the Loire Estuary and the city of Nantes. Among the points of interest at Nantes are the 15th century St Pierre cathedral and a 10th century castle.
