One of the 16 Vestmannaeyjar islands off Iceland's south coast, with a harbour village notable for its highly-coloured roofs and spectacular natural setting as well as birdlife. In 1973 a volcano on Helmaey Island became active, forcing the evacuation of the island's main town, Vestmannaeyjar. Today you can see the huge wall of lavaflow that creates a natural seawall beneath the still smouldering volcano. It is now one of the largest breeding grounds in the world for puffins, gannets and guillemots.
The following 16 cruises call at Helmaey.
